Linktipp: Logo! News for children

Have you already heard of the tv-program called Logo! ?
It is a daily news program for children. A great advantage is that it comes with subtitles.
The vocabulary they use is easier, they exlain some specific terms using simple animations and also present many images during it. And the best, you can watch it for free online in the ZDF Mediathek.

Don't forget to activate subtitles and have fun learning!

What do you think, are they suitable (geeignet) for learning a foreign language? You can try it out!

The ICDL has a massive collection (Sammlung) of children’s books (Kinderbücher) from around the world, including many in German. The best of it is that you can find the same book in several languages. 

For example:

It has a practical zoom-in function, you can browse (blättern) easily in the chosen book and you can learn some basic or advanced vocabulary.

It´s a free beginner German course from the University of Texas at Austin. This course provides many multimedia resources and activities you should try out.

BBC Deutsch Plus

Deutsch Plus was a TV series to learn German first broadcast in 1996 and repeated regularly over the next 10 years. The accompanying book and CDs have since been updated and are available from online retailers.

Linktipp: Lingua.ly - learn German for free

Language learning platform Lingua.ly has launched a Web app that helps individuals learn a language on all browsers.

Lingua.ly provides users with a free dictionary and learning platform to highlight foreign-language words (currently only for English, French, German, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Russian  and Hebrew) and add them to a cloud-based account. 

How does it work? 

You register for free and start reading articles from newspapers like Zeit.de, Spiegel.de according to your preferences and interests. Optionally you can install the free Chrome extension so that whenever you are reading a German article and stumble over an unknown word, you can get an instant translation and pronunciation by double-clicking it. 

After you’ve done that a few times, the Chrome extensions saves these words in a library and keeps checking every few days if you still know them.

I find this tool to be quite useful, especially for advanced learners.

LinkTipp: L-Pack

The “L-Pack: Citizenship Language Pack for Migrants in Europe” project focuses on the development of “a pack” of colloquial language learning exercises (L-PACK) for adult migrants in 6 European languages: the three languages of the EU countries that attract the highest number of migrants not speaking the national language German, Italian and Spanish plus three other less widely used and taught languages modern Greek, Czech and Lithuanian. The project content is specifically developed to cover the needs of adult migrants that have only basic knowledge of national language and wish to further develop their language skills, according to level A2 set by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Linktipp: Practice with Lyrics

Hello German learners! As you may have already noticed, I like to surf through cyberspace looking for new and/or great websites that can help us learn German (there are many out there). 
These days  I came across a nice one:

Lyrics Training is a great website that allows you to practice your understanding of lyrics in music videos. You simply select the song you want to listen to and Lyrics Training will upload the video and start to play the song along with subtitles.

Depening on the level you select (beginner, intermediate, advanced), there will be certain words missing from the subtitles that you have to complete yourself as the video plays. The video and subtitles automatically stop until you have completed the missing word! You don´t know or understand the word, then simply press the Tab button to go on, or Back Space to hear the line again. The program keeps a record of the words you could not understand for you to review afterwards (Vocabulary section). At the end you get a score that shows how well you have done.

There are lots of languages to choose from (not just German) and you can add your own songs to practice. So you can shoot two rabbits at once by listening to your favorite song and learning its lyrics.
